CORRECTIONS FOR THE LAST ASSIGNMENT: The essay before was coherently written with a central focus. Your analysis of Chen Duxiu’s thoughts were exactly on the point. Well done for that. I’d like to suggest you focus more on the analysis of the gobbet here. Chen Duxiu’s general thoughts as a leader of New Culture movement is important, but the quote itself also deserves closer examination in its specificities in how Chen presented Confucianism to call for an abolishment of it and to thoroughly transform Chinese culture.

The gobbet here is a typical May Fourth narrative of Confucianism – as rigidly hierarchical, patriarchal and cruel. The same narrative was exaggerated and represented into “cannibalism” in Lu Xun’s famous short story “Madman’s Diary- ” where Confucian values were seen as “man eating man.” The underlying logic of Lu Xun’s short story and Chen’s thesis is similar : the rigid practice required by Confucian values is hindering any individual expression of emotion or free circulation of ideas. Chen duxiu was the leader of new cultural Movement, and was the firmest iconoclastic anti-Confucianist. A luxury cast of intellectuals answered the call to promote a new culture from various aspects: philosophy, language, family form, literature and so on. The kernel journal New Youth, organ of the movement, was initiated by Chen, and served as the venue for publishing almost all of the influential essays. This essay, where the quote was extracted, was also published in the journal. The essay, entitled “The way of Confucius and modern life,” was a typical Chen duxiu thesis to call for the young people to adopt a modern way of life. It attacks confucism from all aspects, and explained why it was the severe hurdle for introducing a modern life from a Marxist materialist point of view. Together with other participating intellectuals, Chen was trying to reshape set of moral in China along with removing the long seated Confucianism.
