2. Create and customize a symbol map viz using the below steps:

  • Go to sheet 1 and rename it Map-UFO Sightings
  • Use City, latitude and longitude fields to create a symbol map
  • Apply a color spectrum to the map using the DateTime field (choose your own endpoint colors to represent the data), change the opacity to 60% with no borders
  • Reduce the size of the circles to the lower end to make easier to see
  • Edit the Tooltip and insert the comment field using 9-point font, italicized, and text color matching the blue in NASA’s logo using the Pick Screen color feature (please don’t ask where to find the NASA logo)

3. Create and customize a Treemap viz using the below steps:

  • Create a new sheet and name it Treemap-Shape
  • Use the Number of Records field and Shape field to create the treemap using Show Me
  • Apply a color spectrum using the Number of Records field (choose your own endpoint (Suggestion: white, black or a muted color better represents the low end of a spectrum for a range of values 0 to n. Try the NASA blue for the high end)
  • Use Number of Records field as a text label and make the font size Bold and 14

4. Create and customize a text table viz using the below steps:

  • Create new sheet and name it UFO Detail Table
  • Use the State, DateTime (Month of, and Day of), Shape, and Duration (Hours/Min) fields to create a base text table (Hint these should be your Headers for the table, your discreet DateTime field will appear twice on the row shelf, for Month and Day)
  • Apply the Comments field as your Text Label for the table (Hint – this will take the place of abc)

5) Create and customize a Highlight Table viz using the below steps:

  • Create new sheet and name it Sighting Summary Table
  • Bring Shapes to Rows shelf and Date/Time to Columns shelf
  • Drag the Number of records field onto the Text Marks card
  • Now use Show Me to choose Highlight Table (top right)–Notice that Number of Records has been applied to Color
  • Expand the Date/Time field to show Months
  • Add a column (right) to total the number of records for each shape (from top menu: Analysis>>Totals>>Show Row totals for watch this video: to an external site.
  • Sort the table by number of record by shape using Total column
  • Edit the color spectrum to use the NASA blue
  • In which Month do sightings of Fireball shapes spike? Hmmm.

The following exercise will reinforce you knowledge of calculated fields and parameters in Tableau. You will use your existing 440 Superstore data set. This is the same data set you used for your preliminary dashboards in Module 9.

  1. Open workbook 440_Superstore Work Book (or save it as a new workbook Assignment_4 so you don’t lose any work.
  2. Create several new calculated fields using the below criteria:
  1. Create a new calculated field named Unique Order Count which represents a Count Distinct of Order IDs in the data source—not that this is a different value than field Orders(count)
  1. Create a new calculated field named Average Sales Per Order which represents a ratio between the SUM of sales divided by the Unique Order Count field
  1. Make 2 new Dimension Fields, Order Date1 and Ship Date1 by duplicating the Fields Order Date and Ship Date and changing the data types to String.
  1. Duplicate the Product ID field. Use it to create a new calculated field named Product_ID_String which converts the Product ID field to be a string type (if not already a string type)
  1. Rename the new calculated field Category ID which uses the first portion of Product_ ID_String field (Hint use the split function-follow syntax examples in calcuatated field dialog box)

  1. Create a new calculated field named Days to Ship which will show the number of Days an Order takes to ship (Hint – Use the datediff function comparing Order Date and Ship Date you’re looking for the ‘day’ of the ‘month-day-year’ expression )

  1. Create a new calculated field named Late Shipment (flag) which will have a value of “1” for those orders that ship more than 5 days after order (Hint IF statements could be used )
  2. Add Order Date to Filters make it continuous, and set It as a Relative Range of 10 days from a reference date of 12/31/2016;

  1. Build a table (start with SHOW ME and force it back to a table if Tableau changes it). In Rows place: Order ID, Product ID, Product Name, Order Date1, and Ship Date1 (order matters);
    1. On Columns place: Category ID; On Text place Days to Ship and set the measure to Average (use the dropdown menu), then format it to font-10 bold. Add Late Shipment to Color. Modify the color to Late is RED #aa0000 [Self-check your calculated fields by the table—are they correct? If not, edit them]

  1. Create a parameter named Late Threshold that is an integer value, in a Range between 1 and 10, initial value=5. Then edit your Late Shipment field and replace the value of “5” with your new parameter. Then Show the Late Threshold Parameter and set it to 3. What happens to data values in the table?
