After reading Lomawaima’s article and watching The Thick Dark Fog, how are boarding schools related to what Garroutte calls on page 81 “a pervasive legacy of insecurity and pain” that many American Indians experience? What additional thoughts, feelings, or questions are you left with after learning more about American Indian boarding schools?

So far, The reading for this week Chapter three in real Indians and the lecture begins with a discussion of the Mashpee tribe in Massachusetts.

The Mashpee situation is one of the most exemplary cases of just how deep seated stereotypical notions of Native American culture is in American society, the Mashpee case also exemplifies what a slippery slope judging a native community based on culture can be.

Who has culture and who doesn’t, what counts as culture, how much culture, do you need to display to be distinctive what’s distinctive enough, there are so many different questions that can be asked when trying to figure out just what can be considered culture.

native peoples and culture are usually figured as primitive and stuck in the past, whether that’s through language, by using the past tense, when talking about Native Americans like saying Native Americans used to live here or by thinking that native American culture is static and unchanging.

Garroutte describes how cultural definitions can sometimes impose a misleading and timeless homogeneity onto tribes.

thinking that Native Americans live in teepees or only speak their language or only eat foods they hunt and gather ties back to the settler colonial logic of elimination by making native peoples as not part of the present and thus not part of future.

The Mashpee case also supported the incorrect idea that if a tribe lost some part of its culture.

or cultural practices, then they could never legitimately reconstitute themselves or their practices, and this is a very Western and linear idea of culture and tribal existence, one that is not in line with native worldviews.

So, all in all, the Mashpee case really shows how pervasive ideas about cultural authenticity are and how they can be used against native American peoples in social, political and legal contexts.

And this is not to say that culture isn’t also really important to native people because it definitely is and it’s part of what connects us to our ancestors our lands and our history.

there is great cultural reverence in tribal communities and aspects of our culture, continue to shape, who we are, as tribal people.

language, for example, is one aspect of culture that remains vitally important to many tribes and native people and it’s something that we’ll be focusing more on in just a couple weeks.

But Native Americans are held to very unrealistic standards related to culture that don’t fully take into account the fact that.

One, culture changes over time and two, that cultural change occurred as a result of colonization and government policies aimed at eradicating native culture and assimilating native people.

constant criticism or judgment that someone isn’t native enough just because they aren’t able to practice aspects of their culture can be very challenging for native people and leads to what Garroutte calls quote a pervasive legacy of insecurity and pain.

native American boarding schools, for example, are directly related to why many native people have been separated from their cultures and histories.

And next week, we will delve into the history and legacy of boarding schools and how the federal government used them as a tool to eradicate native culture.
