What additional thoughts, feelings, or questions are you left with after learning more about American Indian boarding schools?

So far, The reading for this week Chapter three in real Indians and the lecture begins with a discussion of the Mashpee tribe in Massachusetts.

The Mashpee situation is one of the most exemplary cases of just how deep seated stereotypical notions of Native American culture is in American society, the Mashpee case also exemplifies what a slippery slope judging a native community based on culture can be.

Who has culture and who doesn’t, what counts as culture, how much culture, do you need to display to be distinctive what’s distinctive enough, there are so many different questions that can be asked when trying to figure out just what can be considered culture.

native peoples and culture are usually figured as primitive and stuck in the past, whether that’s through language, by using the past tense, when talking about Native Americans like saying Native Americans used to live here or by thinking that native American culture is static and unchanging.

Garroutte describes how cultural definitions can sometimes impose a misleading and timeless homogeneity onto tribes.

thinking that Native Americans live in teepees or only speak their language or only eat foods they hunt and gather ties back to the settler colonial logic of elimination by making native peoples as not part of the present and thus not part of future.

And this is not to say that culture isn’t also really important to native people because it definitely is and it’s part of what connects us to our ancestors our lands and our history.
