Consciousness is a mystery of psychology because other people’s minds cannot be perceived directly and also because the relationship between mind and body is perplexing. Nonetheless, people’s reports of their consciousness can be studied, and these reveal basic properties such as intentionality, unity, selectivity, and transience. Consciousness can also be understood in terms of levels—minimal consciousness, full consciousness, and self-consciousness—and can be investigated for content such as current concerns, daydreams, and unwanted thoughts. Unconscious processes are sometimes understood as expressions of the Freudian dynamic unconscious but are more commonly viewed as processes of the cognitive unconscious that create and influence our conscious thoughts and behaviors. The cognitive unconscious is at work when subliminal perception influences a person’s thought or behavior (without the person’s awareness).

You and a friend are watching the 2010 movie Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a corporate spy. DiCaprio’s character is hired by a businessman named Mr. Saito to plant an idea in the unconscious mind of a competitor while he sleeps. According to the plan, when the competitor awakens, he’ll be compelled to act on the idea, to the secret benefit of Saito’s company. “It’s a cool idea,” your friend says, “but it’s pure science fiction. There’s no such thing as an unconscious mind and no way that unconscious ideas could influence the way you act when you’re conscious.”

1. Watch Inception video clip

a) What would you tell your friend?

b) What evidence do we have that the unconscious mind exists and can influence conscious behavior?

2. Disorders of consciousness and the “Locked-In Syndrome”:

“Locked-in syndrome,” or a pseudocoma, is a condition in which a person is awake and fully conscious, but has no means of producing speech or making limb or facial movements; the only movements the person can make are eye movements. In acute locked-in syndrome, eye movements are also limited. Recent studies suggest that it can take as long as 2.5 months, and in some cases 4–6 years, to realize that a person with the syndrome is conscious. What kinds of tests could you use to identify locked-in syndrome in a person who appears to be in a coma but who can make eye movements or for someone with acute locked-in syndrome? How could you use technology (e.g., brain imaging) to identify acute locked-in syndrome? Research suggests that more than half the time, it is a family member and not a doctor who first realizes that a person with acute locked-in syndrome is conscious (Laureys et al., 2005). Why might this be?

You also read and view the memoir “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” by Jean-Dominique Bauby (and the 2007 French movie of the same name, directed by Julian Schnabel). They tell the true story of journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby, who was diagnosed with locked-in syndrome after suffering a massive stroke. Bauby wrote his memoir by blinking when the correct letter was reached by a person slowly repeating the alphabet.
