This week’s lab explores Electrostatic potential (measured in Volts) and Electric Field as the gradient of potential.
In this Pivot Interactives lab, you will use data taken for you to determine the dielectric constant of textbook paper used to make a capacitor. Then you will use a PhET simulation to explore how capacitance and stored energy change with plate separation, connected to a battery (i.e voltage held constant), and then disconnected (charge held constant).

Some background:
How do multimeters measure capacitance?
Unlike voltage, current, and resistance – all of which can me measured “steady state”, multimeters use a time-varying quantity to measure capacitance. The picture shows a 2200?F cylindrical capacitor connected to a Fluke meter, but with an oscilloscope to measure the voltage as a function of time (in milliseconds). In this case, the meter has circuitry that pushes a constant current into the capacitor and measures the resulting change in voltage, both charging and discharging it many times per second. There are other methods (look up “Wien bridge”) but this works OK for most practical applications.
Dielectrics and the classic “textbook capacitor” experiment
Please read this 2-page PDF (from an on-campus lab) on the textbook capacitor and Dielectrics Download textbook capacitor and dielectrics, which provides insight into the Pivot Interactives activity.
