This is the first of five media journals you will be completing throughout the course. Each entry is a building block to a final Media Literacy Assessment Report due in Week 12. Your answers to the Media Journal Entry (MJE) prompts should be written in complete sentences using paragraphs to separate out your ideas/topics/bullet points. There is no minimum or maximum word count, but a general guideline is to aim for between 500 -750 words.

Sometimes, you will be asked to answer a series of questions. Feel free to copy and paste the questions into your document so you can type your answers under each question. Other times, you might be assigned a specific activity and then asked to report on it. If you ever need any clarification, please don’t hesitate to ask the instructor.

Since you will be reviewing these entries at the end of the quarter, my recommendation is that you prepare your responses in separate Word documents and save/organize them in a way you can easily refer back to them. Another way to do this is to keep one Word document with all five entries and copy/paste each individual entry into the text box provided under the assignment link each week.

Media Journal Entry #1 – Search Engines

At the opening of Chapter 3, it talks about a search for who invented homework and then goes on to explain how the information is bogus.

  • How does this contribute to the spread of “fake news” and falsehoods?
  • Do you take the time to make sure information from your searches is true? Why or why not?
  • How do you personally check the credibility of different sites and information to make sure it is accurate/true
  • PART 2 :
  • What are the pros and cons of getting instantaneous answers through search engines? Discuss this question with a partner or small group and generate a list of advantages and disadvantages. Then, think about this list from the point of view of children, teens, adults, and older people. Be sure to consider both short-term and longer-term potential consequences and unanticipated impacts as well.
  • PART 3:
  • Read through Google’s“Information We Collect” as part of their Privacy Policy.
  • List three new things you learned.
  • What surprised/shocked you the most?
  • Will you change your privacy settings when using Google? Why or why not?
  • PART 4:
  • Read this article from 30 years ago predicting the dark side of AI (artificial intelligence): He predicted the dark side of the internet 30 years ago. Why did no one listen?
  • Compare what the predictions were to today’s digital landscape. What surprises you the most? What scares you the most?
