Instructions: in class, we discussed ecocinema and ecodocumentaries and viewed the short ecodocumentary Warriors of Qiugang. Using your knowledge of ecocriticism, eco-pedagogy and ecocinema, watch both ecodocumentaries and compare and contrast them. Pay close attention to how both films:
- visually translate and represent the environmental degradation that accompanies modern civilisations (is there concern over pollution or is it simply an unavoidable aspect of development?)
- represent the lives of the people living on the margins of modern civilisation (what are their stories, concerns, worries?)
- translate the language of those speaking (are the subtitles accurate or manipulated? if the latter, why?)
- engage global audiences to emphasise the precariousness of our planet (do the films claim these are local or global problems?)
There are other perspectives you can use to compare and contrast these films, but hopefully the above bullet points give you a start. Remember, also, to think on the connectedness to place, resilience and relatedness and to how these ideas are translated, in the broadest sense of this term, namely, inter-semiotic communication or communication across varied sign systems, those verbally expressed and those expressed by our senses.
