  • integrating information from sources into your own writing;
  • using a source as a “lens” to better understand another source;
  • distinguishing your writing and thinking from the writing and thinking of others by using integration best practices, like attributive tags;

  • responding substantively to your peers’ posts.

Knowledge:

  • understand the importance of community in successful learning environments; and
  • evaluating the credibility of your own views and the views of others.

Task

Before writing your initial response in this week’s forum, read “The Real Cost of Cheap Groceries,” written by Beth Kowitt and Dan Winters and published in Fortune on January 14, 2019. It can be found by following this link (Links to an external site.).

Consider how this article informs your understanding of what you have read in The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan and how what you have read in our text better prepares you to think about and understand what is written in the Fortune article.

Please write at least a a 300-word initial response to one of the following questions regarding your reading in The Omnivore’s Dilemma and post it by Wednesday. Make specific reference to the text, your own experience, and other readings to support your response. These questions are a starting point for our discussion of this text. Once you have made your initial response, you make take the discussion in other directions.

    • Explain why Pollan might find the following quote by Emerson important for consumers to consider: “You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity.” Discuss Emerson’s quote in relation to “The Real Cost of Cheap Groceries.”
    • Define“free lunch” as Michael Pollan and Joel Salatin might define it. Explain what makes this “lunch” so free. Compare the “free lunch” Pollan writes about to the “cheap lunch” — or cheap food in general — that Kowitt and Winters examine in “The Real Cost of Cheap Groceries.”

After you have posted your initial response to one of the questions, please respond to at least three of your peers’ posts by Sunday.

Process

  1. Read “The Real Cost of Cheap Groceries,” written by Beth Kowitt and Dan Winters.
  2. Post your initial response by Wednesday.
  3. Read all of your classmates’ posts (that were posted by Wednesday).
  4. Reply to at least three of these posts by Sunday. Make reference to something that was mentioned in that individual’s introduction as part of your response.
