Section A questions: CHOOSE 3 ONLY

• Discuss the African philosophical concept of Sankofa. How does it fit into the Afro-Latino political experience explored in the section A materials?
• Articulate the political agency of African descendants in the U.S. during the 20^thcentury with emphasis on Afro-Latinos. What role did Afro-Latinos and/or Afro-Latin Americans played in movements like the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), the Black Power Movement, Black Panthers or the Young Lords? Talk about important people like Arturo Schomburg, Jesus Colon, Maymie De Mena, Ana Livia Cordero and/or Carlos Cooks, to mention a few. Can you think of any other that marked the political history of African descendants in the U.S.?
• Discuss the importance and relationship of different African-descent political and literary movements such as the UNIA, the Young Lords, and the Harlem Renaissance. How do they relate or differ from present-day movements such as the Black Live Matters movement? Mention/discuss any other you know about if you feel call to!
• What’s the relationship, if any, between the Puerto Rican independence movements (regardless of race) and the African American liberation movements? Is there room for collaboration between the two groups? Do you think they should unite as one? Why or why not? Please elaborate your answer.

• Primary Question: Discuss how would you use the concept of nommo to interrogate/discuss/analyze Afro-Latino/Afro-Latin American literary productions
• How does the African diaspora connects internationally through orality/literature/speech despite differences in languages, ethnicities, generations and nationalities? What are the main tropes/symbols and uniting threads in Africana oral history?
• What’s the relationship between writing, the spoken word and political power (what we explored in unit II) for African descendants? What role did Arthur Schomburg played in the Harlem Renaissance and how the Harlem Renaissance influenced literary movements in the Caribbean and Latin America and viceversa?
• Discuss Negrismo and Negritude literary movements. What connects, if anything, the writings of Nicolás Guillen and Luis Pales Matos, among others, with the Harlem Renaissance?
• What is Afrofuturismo and what has been the role of Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Latinos in its development? Does it maintain tropes from negrismo, negritude, the Harlem Renaissance and/or other African diaspora literary movements? Why or why not?
• Openly discuss/mention/analyze/review the poems you chose to read. Which ones did you like? How did you react to them? What did they made you feel or think? What do they talk about the most? Are they still relevant in today’s society? What has changed, if anything? Did it inspire you in any way?
• What are some Afro-Latina (women) writers you’d like to mention? Are their works any different from men like Guillen and Pales Matos? Why or why not? Why is it important to recognize their contribution to Africana literary production across time?
