Respond to: Sports Journalism has had the most impact on social media via the invention of the smartphone. Although that may seem like a broad topic, it’s true and it is explained in each part of this week’s lecture. In the overall lecture, Professor James Brannon begins the lecture by showing press conferences before the phones and after the invention. As one who attend many press conferences at our school, I haven’t realized it that much until looking at these pictures of what it was before hand.The article from ‘The O’Colly also dives into it when explaining the “typically been in form of emails, phone calls,…” which are all from a “click of a button” either from fans of press conferences reporting exactly what is going on. These phones have taken the old term of journalism that is known as writing and switched it around in completely new ways. The interview with Chandler Mack shows a bit of a different side of Journalism as he is a Sports Reporter, he talks about live tweeting during games to stay updated with the events, which could be possible without the technology of a cell phone.

Breaking down all of the words that go behind sports advertising and social media shows how important it is not only for the companies but also for our sports side as well. The article from Cyberclick explains the different types of social ads that can be used, but a few of the most popular ones mentioned that are common in sports are Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, and TikTok; the Social Media ones. This hits a good target audience of those who may be interested in watching the game when commonly scrolling on their feed. This was also briefly talked about in the lecture when talking about the case studies of many different types of companies that are involved in sports media. In the example, the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nike, and Mountain Dew are used; all very completely different brands that have very similar audiences and goals. As the Columbus Blue Jackets goal is to sell tickets for the playoff games, Nike shows off famous players wearing their brand, and Mountain Dew broadcasts the commercial to get people to want to drink their drink during the game. When Miller Yoho explains in his interview, the Dukes Mayo bowls social media pages using Facebook and Meta to sell tickets and ads for the events, meanwhile Instagram is more focused towards visuals despite the majority of the sports fans that live on twitter. Looking into all of these different types of social media pages that have common similarities shows how different social media platforms have different impact on their advertising based on the audience they are trying to connect with.
