Discussion post 1: Communities within Communities

Review chapters 11 and 12 for a detailed definition of communities within communities along with examples and case studies. Choose a community from these chapters or another from outside the textbook that interests you, and discuss how it meets the definition of a community within a community. Include relevant information about specialized vocabulary that is specific to the community you chose. Discuss how the community is shaped internally and perceived externally by way of media and values. Include any cultural icons or artifacts associated with this community. Finally, provide a personal example of how you and your friends, colleagues, and/or relatives use special language or artifacts to identify yourselves as a “mini community”. For example, my father grew up in a divided neighborhood where one could identify friends and close relatives by a particular whistle. Immediate visual contact was not necessary to recognize when someone was wanting to call attention to themselves, rather the distinctive whistle sufficed. Please be sure to use plenty of support from the readings in all posts, and to cite outside sources that you may use to gather information.
