The overarching topic for this week is ethics: both what it means to act ethically as an anthropological researcher and what it means to act ethically in a workplace.

The Kingsolver reading “Thinking and Acting Ethically in Anthropology” contains a number of concepts and guidelines relevant to your role as researchers at your internship sites. Some key concepts to consider in your own posts and as you read others’ are: taking the “least harmful course of action” and “trying to consider as many perspectives as possible with regard to whatever we are studying” (Kingsolver, p. 71). Kingsolver also talks about “conflicts in accountability” as a specific kind of ethical issue (p. 74). What does this mean? Have you experienced any such conflicts in accountability?

Kingsolver’s discussion of conflicts in accountability dovetails nicely with Gentile’s notion (developed in both the video and article) of “voicing values” in the workplace. What are the dynamics of voicing values in the workplace? How does this approach challenge business practices? Have you encountered situations in your internship in which an employee or manager “voiced values” in the way Gentile describes? Can you imagine any such conflicts that might arise for you in your internship? What might they be?

Do the points made by Sienna Craig in the short video seem at all relevant to your work and research as interns? If so, how? If not, on what basis do they seem irrelevant?

These are just some of the questions you should keep in the forefront of your mind as we conduct this week’s conversation about ethics in anthropological research and business and workplace ethics.
