On this discussion board, you should place the materials for and have conversations about your informal report drafts. As a reminder, here are the week deadlines for this board:

BEFORE 11:59 PM on Wednesday 10/11/23

All students should provide one idea for all five report types we’ve discussed so far. That is, one idea for each report type that you could possibly develop for your own submitted assignment.

BEFORE 11:59 PM on Friday 10/13/23

Each student should post responses about which report type ideas seem the most viable to develop into your fully-fledged reports. In other words, provide feedback on your classmate’s ideas.

BEFORE 11:59 PM on Sunday 10/15/23

Each student should post a fully developed draft of ONE of their reports.

You are free to create threads and posts below according to any system your group deems appropriate. All writers, of course, are expected to remain active on the board throughout this process.

On this discussion board (the first of two) we’re going to take a detailed look at some of the sample reports in the textbook, digging more fully into how they operate. For this board, we’ll be talking about the following three report types:

The sample PROGRESS REPORT, found on page 355 OR 340 of Writing that Works

The sample PERIODIC REPORT, found on page 359 OR 343 of Writing that Works

The sample TRIP REPORT, found on page 368 OR 351 of Writing that Works

NOTE: Page numbers may be slightly different across various editions and formats, but the source sample reports are the same across all recent editions of the textbook.

On the discussion threads below, reflect (a) on the most important variables of audience, author, and message under which the authors seem to be operating and (b) the most successful or least successful rhetorical choices the writers made in light of that context.

In other words, what were the most important elements in the writing situation for these documents, and how effectively did the writers respond to that context?

As always, don’t feel like your response has to explicate any of the above fully. Multi-paragraph responses aren’t necessary and in many ways aren’t desirable. Think of this board as an opportunity to engage meaningfully with your fellow students, to ask questions, and to consider how to transfer the knowledge to your own writing.
