American cinema COM 260 : critical academic (scholarly) research, approximately 10-12 pages

The second paper will be devoted to critical academic (scholarly) research, approximately 10-12 pages in MLA format or another style you have followed in your major, adhering to sound research methods and practices. I expect that this paper will be concise, sharply focused on one subject with a fair degree of cogency, and accurately referenced wherever citations are necessary. We will discuss potential topics in class for each paper. All papers must be double-spaced with only your name and course title and section at the top left of the first page; number all pages. I will not accept any paper that features only websites as sources and I insist on the use of your texts; academic, peer-reviewed journal articles; and other books, periodicals, and newspapers, and then websites that you can authenticate as scholarly in nature, factually accurate, and credible and verifiable sources for this course. Due APRIL 25.

You need to select a subject that’s narrowly focused to make it easier to write a paper that’s 10-12 pages long (without a title page and Works Cited or Reference page). Some ideas for subjects:

A genre

A decade

A single film that you can describe as a classic film because of its integration of all the art necessary to make it a great collaborative production.

A comparison of two films, at least one of which must be in the period we’re studying: 1900 to 1976 (All the President’s Men).

A movement, such as the Pre-Code Era; the history of censorship between the end of Pre-Code (1934) and 1965, before the official start of the Movie Rating System; the films of The Great Depression; Hollywood’s Contribution to WWII films and propaganda; the Social Problem films of the postwar era; HUAC and the Anti-Communist Witch-hunt against the film industry, including the self-imposed blacklist; the rapid changes in the 1950s because of television’s popularity and other changes in the nature of our American lifestyle; the Cold War era and propaganda films of mainstream Hollywood; the cultural revolution of the late 1960s, including Civil Rights and the Vietnam War.

As you can see, there is no shortage of topics for you.

I expect at least 10 pages of text and, most important, as I’ve emphasized numerous times in class and as comments on students’ papers, you must cite all your sources correctly within the text as well as on the Works Cited page, using MLA or any other style you’re familiar with such as APA.

All quotes must be cited at the end and any ideas or other paraphrased material should also be cited after every paragraph that includes such references.
