Assigment 8 Interview Transcript

STEP 1: Find your research participant. This person needs to meet the following criteria:

1. When possible, please use someone who meets the actual criteria for who you would be interviewing (i.e. if your research question is about motherhood, choose to interview an actual mom). When this isn’t possible, do as close as you can (i.e. your research question is about the experiences of transfer students at UNLV and you can’t find a transfer student, it would be better to interview at least another UNLV student than like… your dad.

2. To make this experience actually helpful to you I am begging you not to choose your best friend, significant other, roommate, etc. I know you’ll use someone you know, but challenge yourself to try to at least get someone not in your inner circle.

3. The person must be 18. These other guidelines are a little loosey-goosey. This one is absolutely non-negotiable for ethical reasons. If your research question involves interviewing children, choose someone 18+ and ask them to think back to that time.

4. You’re welcome to do your interview virtually. You’re also welcome to use the discussion board to get volunteers. (Automatic full-grade bump up on this assignment if you volunteer to be interviewed by one of your classmates and complete the interview. Make a note of it on your submission if you do, including the name of the person you did the interview for and the topic of the interview.)

STEP 2: Conduct a trial interview with your research participant using the interview guide you created last week.

You may choose to record and transcribe the interview (use any free recording app on your phone, there are numerous free/very cheap AI methods to transcribe an audio recording– it’s not cheating to use them) OR you may take detailed notes about your respondent’s answers.

STEP 3: Ask your research participant for their feedback on your questions and interview presence.

STEP 4: Make changes to your interview guide based on your experience and your respondent’s feedback.

STEP 5: Write a 2-3 paragraph reflection on your interview in which you describe how the interview process went from beginning to end, and what changes you made to your interview guide based on this first trial interview.

STEP 6: Submit a document containing the following materials:

1. Your interview transcript or detailed notes, edited to remove identifying information

2. Your revised interview guide

3. Your reflection.
