There are always interesting legal cases in the news. Use a search engine (Google, Bing, etc.) to search for “Tort Cases 2023.”

You should see MANY options from which to choose. Open and scan through some of the links; then, pick a case that interests you.

1) Copy the link* of one of the articles that grabs your attention.

2) Give us the name and date of the case.

3) Write a brief summary of what was involved in the case (answer common questions of Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How).

4) Discuss your reaction to the case and the verdict. Include your reasons for choosing this case and your reactions.

5) Paste the link at the bottom, so classmates who might like to read the article in its entirety may do so.

Remember, this is worth 50 points, so put a little effort into your post and reply! To receive the full credit, you must:

1) Read the rubric for discussions. A link is posted in the announcements. Make sure your post and replies meet the criteria for full credit.

2) Submit your response at least 2 days prior to the due date for that discussion. This will give others a chance to read and respond to your post.

3) Create a post that demonstrates your understanding of the concepts in the question, including at least 1 citation & reference from a source other than your text you used as support in your answer. (Even if you are writing about a personal experience, use an outside source to support your claims or demonstrate the reasons for what occurred according to the experts.) Proofread for clarity and mechanics. Do not use “i” as a personal pronoun–be professional and avoid conversational.

To earn full credit, posts should be between a minimum of 150 words with at least one citation and reference.

4). After you have posted your original reply, create a substantive response to the post of a classmate. (The following will not earn you any points: “That happened to me too”; or “I agree with you”; or “I really liked your post; that is interesting!”) Your reply post must add new information to the discussion thread, such as an example or new perspective. Look for references that you can use to respond to a concept discussed in a classmate’s post. Replies should be a minimum of 100 words for full credit.

Read a majority of your peers’ posts (be sure they are marked as “read”). Tip; this might require you to visit the discussion more than once.

NOTE: Use the following as a guideline on how to cite and reference resources in APA format:

Citations follow the part of your post which was supported by the reference. For example, let’s suppose you wrote the following somewhere in your discussion post:

Experts suggest that people with a degree earn more than 10 times in wages and salaries over a lifetime than a peer who does not have the credentials (Jones, 2019).

At the end of your post, type “Reference” as a heading and give the author’s info, date, and URL:

TIP: To copy a URL to use in your references, open the article’s web page, go up to the address bar, right click and select copy. Then you can paste the url directly into your post under the heading “Reference.”
