In light of these developments, I’d like you to think about how the history of surveillance ties into processes of globalization. In your original post for this discussion, please respond to at least 2 of the questions below, using evidence, examples, and citations from at least one class textbook to support your ideas:

  • What is the relationship between surveying, map-making, and surveillance? (See Ström Chapter 1)
  • How are European expansionism, colonialism, capitalism, and surveillance connected? (See Ström Chapter 1)
  • What is the panopticon, and how does it illustrate a clear example of surveillance? (See Ström Chapter 1)
  • What are some ways in which workplaces have historically used surveillance techniques to monitor and control the actions of employees? (See Ström Chapter 1)
  • How do new digital technologies play a critical role in globalization? (See Steger Chapter 1)
  • How do new digital technologies play a critical role in surveillance? (e.g., voice-activated GPS and navigation units, voice-activated doorbells and security systems, self-driving cars, digital assistants like Alexa, computer-connected TVs, social media companies, etc.) (See Steger Chapter 1)
  • Is surveillance a positive or negative force? Or, does it depend on the circumstance? If so, how? (See Ström Chapter 1)
  • Is globalization a positive or negative force? Or, does it depend on the circumstance? If so, how? (See Ström Chapter 1)

(Write an original post between 150-250 words in length. You may go over 250 words, but please try to stay as close to this range as possible)

Guiding Questions for Replies to Classmates (Part II)

Finally, please comment on the posts of at least 2 of your classmates. In your replies to other students, identify what you like about their response. Note if you have any common understandings of these concepts. Make parallels between the ideas of your classmates and your own. If you learned something new from a classmate, be sure to note this in your reply. Be sure to be detailed, specific, and remain on topic. Be sure to provide strong rationale for your replies, and to meet the length requirements.

(Write 2 replies to 2 separate classmates. Use at least 75 words in each reply. You may go over 75 words for each reply, but please try to stay as close to this range as possible)

Netiquette Guidelines

Be sure to follow SDCCD Netiquette Guidelines in your original post and your replies to other students. It is also expected that you go beyond stating opinions and use information from the textbook and other reliable academic research sources to back up your ideas. Of course, as stated previously, you must ensure that you cite any outside information that you use to guide your responses.

Citation Guidelines

Note: it is not required that you use outside sources, but I do ask that you incorporate information from at least one of our class textbooks in your post. When you do this, please use APA in-text citations and references.

If you do outside research for this discussion, it is expected that you use citations. When you summarize, paraphrase, or include quotes from the textbook, supplemental readings, internet sites, or other outside materials in your response, be sure to cite your sources with in-text citations & a references list in APA style. If you do not do this, you will lose points on your post.

If you are citing information from your Steger textbook, here is how you can do this in APA style:

  • In-text citations for direct quotes: (Steger, 2020, p. 1).
  • In-text citations if paraphrasing/summarizing: (Steger, 2020).
  • References (to list at the end of your entry): Steger, M.B. (2020). Globalization: A very short introduction. Oxford University Press.

If you are citing information from your Ström textbook, here is how you can do this in APA style:

  • In-text citations for direct quotes: (Ström, 2020, p. 1).
  • In-text citations if paraphrasing/summarizing: (Ström, 2020).
  • References (to list at the end of your entry): Ström, T.E. (2020). Globalization & surveillance. Rowman & Littlefield.

please send replies to these two students Is globalization a positive or negative force? Or, does it depend on the circumstance? If so, how? (See Ström Chapter 1)

To address this question there is most definitely a positive and negative impact on globalization. Globalization is the social process of making the world connected ( Steger, 2020, 2). Based on this definition Globalization is a positive force as you have connection with the world. You are able to see and make yourself familiar with the outside world. An example of this would be an individual living across the world but has family in some other country or location. Through globalization they have the opportunity of being connected with their family members. I also wanted to include the story of the journalist and his lost iPhone because I thought it was really cool, and is a great example of globalization. Because of that lost iPhone Matt and Li met, showcasing how globalization is something that is evolving and constantly creating this sense of social networks, and expanding social relationships (Steger 2020).

Is surveillance a positive or negative force? Or, does it depend on the circumstance? If so, how?

This question is really hard to answer because surveillance based on the situation is a good thing but based on others is not. The book defined surveillance as the social process of watching over something for the pure purpose of having control over it (Strom, 2020, 8). Which is creepy and at the same time it is violating an individual’s freedom of privacy. How would someone know if they are being recorded in secret, or just in general them being recorded without knowing is just wrong. But it is positive in the sense of catching people who do things that they are not supposed to be doing, and that is about it. As well as the idea of just having all these high tech trackers, activity monitors, etc etc (Abril and Harwell, 2021). All have their ups and downs in terms of being good and bad but it is getting out of hand. Individuals have the right of privacy and constantly being in surveillance without them knowing is breaking that first amendment.

What is the relationship between surveying, map-making, and surveillance?

The written history of the word survey starts long ago in the 1400s when it was first used and established to mean what we know it to mean today, during the emergence of capitalist modernity as a social formation that ultimately led to sweeping European conquest (Strom, 2020). This desire to survey and later colonize foreign lands necessitated the surveyor to purposefully ignore and highlight aspects of the map that aided in maintaining the imbalance of power within the status quo, which of course includes the surveillance and control of whoever they decide to conquer. “As with mapping, this creates simplifications and distortions according to the cultural assumptions and the nature of the interests being served” (Strom, 2020, pg.15).

How are European expansionism, colonialism, capitalism, and surveillance connected?

While Columbus’ blunder was one that was highly influential in European colonial expansion, map-making was already being recognized for its power in the pillaging and plundering of resource-rich nations. “The Portuguese prince known as Henry the Navigator (1394–1460)… understood that maps were crucial to this process, and he created a law to make them a state monopoly and ban their dissemination” (Strom, 2020, pg.15). This points to an already considered notion that whoever controls the “surveillance” of lands and borders controls how everyone within those lands relates to each other and the world, which is arguably the most important part of effective expansionism which, is in its own right, is one of the most integral parts of capitalism.
