Wildfires are a man-made or human-caused disaster that have progressively gotten worse over the past two decades. Spiritual considerations surrounding this kind of disaster is often a place of comfort and protection for those who are impacted by wildfires (Lalani, et al., 2021). Spirituality has been found to increase resilience in individuals and communities by bringing a strong sense of belonging, compassion, and a positive outlook (Lalani, et al., 2021). In the most recent wildfire that devastated the Hawaiian island of Maui I feel that spirituality plays a crucial role for native Hawaiians who own homes. There have been reports of realtors calling families who lost their homes asking if they would be interested in selling their property (Ludden, 2023). By locals, realtors who come in and offer large sums of money right after a disaster are referred to as “land grabbers”. In my life, I feel being asked such a thing as I am under such grief would be maddening and spiritually harmful. I would begin to fear that members of my community would have no choice but to sell and rebuild elsewhere. I feel that for many of the native Hawaiians who are experiencing this would also have a disrupted sense of spirituality. Community health nurses can apply a Christian worldview to the context of a disaster by eliminating bias in the care they give. Those who are unhoused deserve the same level of care and attention as those who have a roof over their head. The same must be said when providing care for someone who is an alcoholic vs someone who is not. The alcoholic may need more acute care, especially if they are going through severe withdrawals while also living through a disaster like a wildfire. The community health nurse must not let bias or judgement impede the delivery of care. Within the community, the nurse can remain informed of resources for specific communities and connect them with one another. By doing so, they open doors to spirituality for patients of unique communities. In regard self and colleagues, the community health nurse can apply a Christian worldview through accountability. By holding themselves and their colleagues accountable they make it more likely that health care will remain unbiased, free of judgement, and will meet the unique needs of all individuals.
