Physical assessment of children is similar to that of an adult. Children can be assessed using the Pediatric Assessment Triangle. The assessment is based on the tool of observation in order to make the child feel comfortable. Using the acronym, TICLS which means, tone, interactivity, consolability, look (gaze), speech (cry) (Walker & Hanna, 2020). Observation of breathing and circulation is assessed in the child. Nurses must remember the acronym ABCD which means, airway, breathing, circulation, and disability. It’s more difficult to assess a child since the child cannot provide help during the assessment. An adult can offer information in which the practitioner can use during the assessment. With children, nurses must minimize the least amount of physical touch in order to make the child feel as comfortable as possible. Simple and clear communication should be used where both the parent and child can understand. Visuals can be provided where children can interpret. Numerous changes occur as the child ages affecting the cognitive, physical, psychological, and emotions (Grand Canyon University, 2022).
