What distinguishes Canada’s regions is a fundamental question. We like to classify things that we study, so how do we classify regions? This written assignment, consisting of three questions, is designed to test your knowledge of course concepts. The assignment will be marked out of 100 and is worth 15% of your final grade.

For each of questions 1 and 2, please provide between 1.5 to 2 pages (350-500 words), double-spaced answers (not more than 500 words each). Include one title page for assignment.

In your response for questions 1 and 2, you can use your textbook to begin. However, you are encouraged to expand your answers by including your own thoughts and examples, and you are required to include a minimum of two external references per answer. Include these references in a bibliography and as in-text citations.

QUESTIONS

  1. Explain how the core areas of Canada have changed since 1500 and what were some of the historical reasons for these changes? Use examples from two regions to do your analysis. Did cores become peripheries or the other way round? Begin your answer by providing your own definitions for core and periphery. Illustrate your answer with reference to two different regions.
    The paper by Stadel (2009) Core areas and peripheral regions of Canada: Landscapes of contrast and challenge, provides an extensive overview of the core-periphery model. You may use this article as one of your two external references.(40 marks)
  2. Bone identifies four areas of tension in Canadian society that he argues threaten the regional cohesiveness of the country. Referring to one of the four faultlines he discusses (Regional, Quebec, Indigenous Minority, Immigration) do you think this faultline is more active or less active for Canada’s future? Provide an example from one region.(40 marks)
  3. Immigration is quite important for Canada’s future population. Imagine that you work for a Canadian immigration consulting company and, with your knowledge of regional geography, you will assist families from Ukraine establishing themselves in our country. How will you assist them in finding a suitable region to locate to? Imagine that you or your grandparents were in fact immigrants to Canada. (20 marks

QUESTIONS

  1. What are the economic, environmental, and cultural consequences of developing the Mary River iron deposit on Nunavut (Territorial North)?.Are the frontier and homeland views of this region compatible with one another for this particular project?
  2. With petroleum losing its lustre, to what extent can/should Atlantic Canada depend on changing their fishing industry from cod to shrimp, crab, and lobster and tourism to improve the region’s economic fortunes? What other avenues offer potential as far as future economic growth is concerned?
  3. Compare and contrast Ontario’s economy with that of Québec. To what extent is Ontario’s reliance on automobile industry similar to the role of the aviation industry in Québec?
  4. Speculate as to Western Canada’s future as a region of Canada. In 25 years, will it be classed as a core region or as a periphery region with the demise of oil? What factors will impact on the region’s future development?

    Introduction

    The Final Project requires you to provide information and analyze this information for different regions of Canada.
    The final mark for the Final Project combines the marks obtained in Regional Report with the that of the Journal Entries for a total of 50 marks.

    • The Regional Report is graded out of 100%, then converted to a mark out of 40.
    • The Journal Entries are worth 10 marks total.

    The project consists of the following activities (total 45% of your final mark):

    • Five journal entries:
    • Entry 1: You will document your community.
    • Entries 2–5: Answer four questions in four separate journal entries.
    • Each of the activities accounts for 2 marks, for a total of 10 marks of the Final Project grade.
  5. One Regional Report (2000 words maximum with figures, tables, and maps) on one of the six regions discussed in the course
  6. Entry 1: My Place (2 marks)

    Instructions

    Create a document in a word processing program. Save the document with the title: YourName_GEOG2221_FinalProject.

    Give your first entry a title, “My Place,” and complete steps 1 through 4 below.

    Your first entry will provide you with an opportunity to identify the Indigenous territory that you live in.

    Complete the following activities:

    1. The average house price in Canada as of December 2021 was $713,000. What can you buy for $713,000 in your community? Find a picture from a local real estate agent’s website and copy the picture into your response. Briefly describe the house/property. (For this and future entries, remember to add the copyright information to the bottom of your image if you have not taken the photo or video yourself).
    2. Take a photo of what you consider to be typical of the geography of your community. Copy the picture into your response and briefly describe it. If you are located in Canada, provide the cultural region of Indigenous Peoples map (Figure 3.3) in the textbook (Bone, 2022).
    3. Describe three things you like about this community.
    4. Briefly describe one thing about the community you would like to change.

    Once completed, save the document. You will add to this document by answering the questions in Entries 2–5 listed as follows.

    Entry 2: Region and Faultlines (2 marks)

    This entry asks you to identify the region you live in and to think about what Robert Bone means when he discusses “Faultlines.”

    Add to your Final Project document a title, “Region and Faultlines,” and answer the following:

    1. Which of Bone’s regions does your location fall into?
    2. Please include one photo or link to a video illustrating your answers to the question below.(For this and future entries, remember to add the copyright information to the bottom of your image if you have not taken the photo or video yourself).Consider Bone’s discussion of faultlines as sources of tension in our Canadian fabric. What evidence do you see of one or more faultlines in your location? Describe briefly (approx. 100 words) why you think one or more faultline is evident in your region.

    Entry 3: Physiography (2 marks)

    Add to the Final Project file a title, “Physiography,” and:

    1. Describe an element of the landscape that illustrates the physical geography of your region (approximately 100 words). You may consult your textbook for ideas of where to start (in particular, see the photographs in Chapter 2).
    2. Include a photo showing evidence of the physiography described above. The photo should be a contemporary one that captures evidence of your region’s geological past.

    Entry 4: Hazards (2 marks)

    Add to you Final Project files a title, “Hazard,” and share analysis about your location in terms of how it can be impacted by natural hazards such as a weather, hydrological, or geological hazard. Identify a specific place disrupted by this hazard.

    Entry 5: The Future (2 marks)

    In your Final Project document, create a title, “The Future,” and answer the following question:

    1. What do you think the “human face” of your region will look like in 25 years? Why? (approximately 100 words)

    When selecting an image to illustrate your answer, we realize that you won’t be able to take a picture of something that doesn’t exist yet! So, feel free to exercise your drawing talents, or for those of you panicking at the thought of drawing (myself included!), you can be creative when selecting an image. For example, if I was going to identify the continued demographic expansion of Vancouver by immigrants from Asia as a possible future development, I might choose to show i) a picture of a map with those countries of origin, or perhaps ii) a picture of Chinatown, or perhaps iii) a figure showing how immigration has increased in the last 20 years or so, a trend that could be projected into the future.

    When you have completed this entry, save the file, but do not submit it to the Open Learning Faculty Member. You will add the report to this file before submitting it.

    Regional Report (40 marks)

    In this part of the Final Project, you will analyze one region of Canada. Select a region to write about that is not the region that you are using for the mapping exercise (e.g., not the region you are living in (perhaps for school), or not your “home” region).

    Choose one of the six regions of Canada and write a maximum 2000-word report (approximately 8 written pages, double-spaced), supported by figures, tables, and maps. Make full use of the material in your textbook, but also use the Statistics Canada website or publications available at your local library, newspapers, magazines, books, the internet, the TRU student library service, and other sources to find up?to?date information. Please use a minimum of eight external resources, including peer-reviewed journals.

    You will use APA citation format and APA format (7th edition) for the paper.

    Include information of the following:

    • Describe the dominant (or top one, two, or three) economic activities in the region.
    • Provide a brief description and overview of the natural features that can be found in your region, along with an assessment of how much they contribute to the region’s economy. Also include any recent natural hazards that have impacted that region in the last ten years.
    • Identify the population density and describe how the population is concentrated or dispersed. Is there evidence that your region is seeing an increase or decrease of people since 2001? Where (in what geographic area) is growth occurring (if it is occurring)? If it is not occurring, where (what geographic area or place) in the region are people leaving? Describe one or two reasons (with references) for this pattern.
    • From the above, identify where you think the core areas are and where you think the periphery areas are. Do you think the region is rapidly growing, slow growing, or diminishing in terms of its economy (as per Friedman’s core/periphery model outlined in Chapter 1)?
    • What evidence is there for your conclusion?
  7. Identify and describe one of Bone’s faultlines that is evident in the region. Is the faultline currently dormant, or is it active (see pp. 7–9 of your textbook)? Elaborate on what you think this faultline will look like in 10 years—will it exist? Will it be active and prominent? Why or why not? You are encouraged to include other thoughts.
  8. Identify what you think is the greatest one or two challenges facing people of the region in the next 10 years. Each challenge may be economic, social, demographic, or be rooted in natural resource use. Explain why you think each challenge is paramount to the people of the region. Identify two ways that each challenge could be overcome.
  9. The report must include an introduction and conclusion.
