Hampton University Perspective of Research Methodology Discussion

Watch for media presentations that use some kind of research as part of the presentation. This could be television, radio, internet, a live presentation, or some other kind of presentation. This part of the assignment is designed to help you realize how often research concepts are presented in everyday life. Do not use fictional sources. For this assignment do not use the presentations that have been presented within our course. Identify an appropriate presentation that somehow incorporates research concepts in the presentation content. This needs to be something you saw within the previous two weeks, or something you retrieved this week.

1. Describe the presentation you saw or heard during your preparation for the assignment. Begin this section of your initial post with a brief, appropriately formatted level one heading. Include a properly formatted in-text citation for that source and include a properly formatted reference at the end of your initial post for the presentation you are using.
2. Critique the presentation from the perspective of research methodology. Begin this critique section with a brief, appropriately formatted level one heading. Identify at least 3 issues/features that relate to research. As you write about at least 3 issues/features, and introduce each issue/feature with a brief, appropriately formatted level 2 heading. Use any of the research concepts from the textbook, presentations, or other course discussion content. Include a properly formatted in-text citation for that source content and include a properly formatted reference at the end of your initial post for the presentation you are using.

When you complete your headings, you will have a level one heading for your description, a level one heading for your critique, with level two headings beneath the critique section for each of the issues/features.

Here are examples of the kinds of issues/features you might critique from the perspective of research methodology:

• What was the question being answered or addressed by this research report?
• What research method or methods were used to address/answer the research question?
• How appropriate and effective the methods seem to be.
• Are there legal concerns? If so, what are they in the context of research methodology?
• Are there ethical concerns? If so, what are they in the context of research methodology?
• Is the research report intended to be generalized? If so, can these results be appropriately generalized to a broader population? Why or why not?
• Are there issues related to research validity or reliability, and if so, how are these issues addressed?
• Any other research issues that you would like to address.

You do not need to write about all the examples above; this list is to give ideas to help you begin. You may also write about other research method issues as well.

When you identify your issues/features, be sure to begin each with a brief, appropriately formatted level two heading, as described in the previous section of the assignment instructions.

Remember, you are critiquing the presentation for research issues. Support those research issues and your critique with content from the research textbook or course presentations, including in-text citations and a reference, as described in the previous section of the assignment instructions.
