  • Section 1 Medication Information:
    • Choose one medication from the list below.
    • Fill out boxes 1 through 6 on the Medication Teaching Plan Template to provide information regarding this medication, including the likely reason the patient is receiving the medication (based on the medical disease or condition that the medication is used for).
    • Note about side/adverse effects: include common, unique, and life threatening. Define any medical terms on this list because you will provide this list to your patient when you are teaching them about the medication in Section 2.
    • Use APA format for in-text references included in this section and include a References page in APA format at the end of the paper.
    • Section 2 Narrative Teaching (bottom portion of the Medication Teaching Plan template):
        • This portion of the assignment is based on explaining to the patient:
          • What the medication is used for
          • How it works
          • What they can expect when taking this drug
          • Side/adverse effects
          • Assume that the patient has never been on this medication before
          • Include any other information that the patient would need to know to safely take this medication.
        • Note about: side/adverse effects. In your narrative teaching paragraph, DO NOT simply list the side effects from Section 1 when speaking to the patient in Section 2. Instead, you will inform the patient in your narrative teaching that you are providing that written list of side effects to your patient (from Section 1), and then teach your patient information regarding how to prevent or react to the specific side effects if they occur. Remember to use patient level language with all teaching in this section.
        • Use appropriate level language when speaking to the patient! Remember most patient education material is written at a 5th grade reading level, so choose your words at this level. For example, if you use a medical term, you must also define that term in patient level language because the general population does not have the medical terminology knowledge that nurses possess.
        • You may write the narrative teaching section as a “script” using first person for you, the nurse, if you prefer. For example: Hello Ms. Smith, I am your nurse today and I will be teaching you about a new medication that your provider has ordered….
        • The narrative teaching does not need to be in APA format and does not need to have in-text references since this is a conversation with your patient. However, all information you teach your patient should be based on the referenced information in Section 1.
        • There is a word limit (see rubric) to Section 2 (your patient teaching) because it is critical for you to succinctly provide information so that the patient is not overwhelmed by information, and you can maintain their attention during the teaching session.
