Jane Hill is discussing particular usage of Spanish in the United States, especially in the context of a national culture of whiteness and English.

Hill argues that Mock Spanish may seem funny or clever on the surface, but it also serves a second purpose, where “desirable qualities are assigned to Anglos, and undesirable qualities are assigned to members of historically Spanish-speaking populations.” She therefore argues that mock spanish should be understood to have a “dual indexicality”–a surface “often humorous” meaning, as well as a secondary meaning that is racist.

Hill says there are “four major strategies for the “incorporation” of Spanish-language materials into English.”

• (l) “Semantic derogation”: the borrowing of neutral or positive Spanish loan words which function in Mock Spanish in a jocular and/or pejorative sense;
• (2) “Euphemism”: the borrowing of negative, including scatological and obscene, Spanish words, as euphemisms for English words, or for use in their own right as jocular and/or pejorative expressions;
• (3) “Affixing”:the borrowing of Spanish morphological elements, especially el ‘the’ and the suffix -0, in order to make an English word especially jocular and/ or pejorative; and
• (4) “Hyperanglicization”: absurd mispronunciations, that endow commonplace Spanish words or expressions with a jocular and/or pejorative sense and can create vulgar puns.

In your discussion, try to provide an example of each of these four forms of Mock Spanish, and try to discuss their dual indexicality–(1) how they may seem entertaining, clever or funny, and then (2) how they negatively position Spanish and Spanish speakers (as well as Spanish-speaking nationalities and cultures) in contrast to white, English speaking American norms.
