Dr. Bartlet and class,

Identify and evaluate three competencies that are a strength for you in your current practice.

As a Nurse Practitioner in a family practice clinic in West Virginia, I feel I possess some competencies that are strengths. I feel my 20 years of clinical expertise is an advantage. I understand the health conditions commonly seen in rural populations and possess the skills to provide thorough care to my patients. My ability to diagnose, treat, and manage a range of health issues encountered in different settings allows me to effectively meet the diversity of patients in my area. I feel I am strong in leadership. Working in a rural outpatient environment necessitates communication and collaboration with a team that includes a multitude of healthcare professionals. My ability to effectively lead and collaborate within a team setting is extremely valuable in my opinion. I have expertise in navigating healthcare systems, which includes understanding the challenges, limitations, and available resources within these systems (Heinen et al., 2019). By possessing this skill set, I can adapt to the circumstances of being an outpatient family nurse practitioner while ensuring that patients receive proper care despite any potential constraints within the healthcare system.

Identify and examine three competencies you are interested in further developing as you prepare for your role as a DNP-prepared nurse.

As I prepare for my role as a DNP, there are areas where I’m eager to further develop my competencies. I want to enhance my knowledge and skills in Health Care Policy Development. This involves understanding the process of creating healthcare policies and bringing about positive changes in policies that impact patient care (Fuller & Hansen, 2019). I was recently asked to join a committee within my organization to focus on this and I’m very anxious and excited to begin this new role. I am also interested in working on improving my Evidence-Based Practices. I must stay up to date with evidence-based practices and effectively incorporate them into my everyday work. I try to attend conferences regularly and research often to learn new topics of interest. Strengthening this competency not only requires staying informed about research but also developing strategies to efficiently implement evidence-based practices into healthcare systems (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). I am also interested in advancing my expertise in Strategic Planning. The ability to navigate through changes and lead them within healthcare settings is essential (Heinen et al., 2019). This covers the ability to strategically plan and implement changes that are in line with the goals of the organization. Staying focused on providing patient-centered care is important to me as well. I will be able to navigate through transformations and advancements in healthcare systems.
