According to Larsen & Buss (2014, p.480), expectancy confirmation is a version of self-fulfilling prophecy. Opinions of others, or their opinion of you may produce specific behaviors in accordance to the expectancy confirmation. When I was in high school, I was very quiet and reserved. As an adult, I am conversational and cordial even with strangers. I recently went through my home town on my way to a half-marathon, and ran into someone I knew from high school. This person knew me as I was in high school, and I had a difficult time saying more than “hi, how are you?”. It was the strangest feeling, because I felt like the high school version of myself. This individual’s perception of me from that time in my life, was reflected in their behavior toward me, as well as my behavior toward them.

In addressing question number four, and in accordance with Larsen & Buss (2014, p.512), social role theory related to sex, gender, and personality are societal influence the acceptable traits of males and females. Girls are to be demure, and boys are allowed to be rambunctious. Sportsmanship is in line with social role theory. “observers did not expect greater levels of sportsmanship from women compared to men” (Chiaburu, Harris, & Smith, 2014). A current example would include women often taking the role of domestic duties, even if both spouses work full-time. I have seen many relationships crumble due to this attempt at keeping a social role dynamic.
