SPECIFIC PURPOSE STATEMENT. A clear statement indicating what your audience should be able to do after hearing your speech. Focus on audience behavior: BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE

The following guidelines will help you prepare your Specific Purpose:

• Use words that refer to observable or/and measurable behavior

• Limit the specific purpose to a single idea. If your statement of purpose has more than one idea, you will have trouble covering the extra ideas in your speech.

Formulating the Specific Purpose:

Does the statement of purpose meet these three tests?

CENTRAL IDEA/THESIS states in one sentence what the speech is about. It focuses on the content of the speech. Summarizes the speech in one sentence.

The central idea should be a complete declarative sentence- not a phrase or clause, and not a question, but a grammatically, complete sentence. Uses direct, specific language.

Example:

Phrase: Car maintenance

Question: Is regular car maintenance important?

Complete declarative sentence: Maintaining your car regularly can ensure that it provides reliable transportation.

After formulating central idea, test it against these guidelines:

• Is the central idea a declarative statement?

• Is the central idea a complete sentence?

• Does the central idea use specific language?

• Is the central idea a single idea?

• Does the central idea reflect a consideration of the audience? The occasion? The speaker?

MAIN IDEAS/MAJOR IDEAS–> Use the following questions:

• Does the central idea have logical divisions?
• Are there reasons why the central idea is true?
• Can steps or a chronological progression support the central idea?

GATHER SUPPORTING MATERIAL

A. With your main idea or ideas in mind, your next job is to gather material to support these ideas—facts, examples, definitions, and quotations from others that illustrate, amplify, clarify, provide evidence, or tell a story.

B. Supporting material should be personal and concrete, and it should appeal to your listeners’ senses.

SUBPOINTS. They provide supporting material to your main/major points.
