The reflective learning journal (RLJ) is a private place (viewed only by the instructor and yourself) for you to discuss personal and professional issues related to leadership and management. The journal entries should read as a running narrative, so please create and save this first entry in a word document so that subsequent entries may be added to it.

I am currently a Registered Nurse at an elementary school. I actually work in the office with the Nurse Lead of the organization. When I began this job I had no thoughts or desire to have a lead position. I had very little experience in a lead position. I’ve trained other nurses and aides at prior jobs. I’ve even assisted with in-services. I was a nurse supervisor at a nursing home for a few months. I did not enjoy it because of the constant issues with the staff. However, this current job has changed my point of view. the nurse lead who trained me has been very influential. She has taught me the different departments I have to interact with, and the policies, and procedures of the company. She’s also taught me the personal characteristics that are needed in order to be taken seriously. I have always had more of a gentle approach. I allow others to operate independently, and assist when needed. However, I’ve learned some employees take advantage of said freedom but sometimes that approach is not respected. I’ve been taught being stern is better. Also not becoming very friendly with staff, helps. I know that my strengths are my ability to communicate and listen effectively. I am empathetic, I work well on teams, I am dependable, and ambitious. This module has assisted me in learning the difference between leadership and management and what is needed for each. This is important to me and my professional development as I advance within my career, leadership is needed for each role.
