You have a 65-year old patient whose physical health has taken a turn for the worst. By following the doctors orders, they have a high rate of success to get healthy again, but not at the level that they were used to and cannot continue to keep working. Currently, they feel lost and hopeless. You know that your patient is at the eighth stage of what is called integrity versus despair:

1. How would you help your patient who is struggling at this stage?

1.If I had a patient who was struggling with this, I would help them with this stage by making sure we took the right steps to make them feel hopeful. Things that we could do to help them through this stage would be to help them stay active and involved with what they love (ie. church or groups). We could go for short walks if that was tolerated, do activities or light sports if that was tolerated either standing or in a wheelchair. We could go on outings to places this person likes, whether that be shopping, movies, museums, etc. Just things to keep the mind at ease and enjoy life the way that they can. Not all people go through this stage. Most people who are healthy tend to have a balance between each as they age. If you have a balance, it’s not as much as a shock as it is if you don’t have or find a balance in the first place. In this situation, this person may feel like they haven’t lived life to the fullest, or they haven’t lived up to who they thought they should be. And now that health has declined, they are realizing that that won’t be possible like they had hoped. This person may feel like they haven’t lived a meaningful life yet and are scared that they won’t since they are struggling with health now. As a person in healthcare, our job would be to make them feel like they still have meaning left in life and that they aren’t done living their life to the fullest yet.

2It’s important to provide your patients with emotional support, reassurance, and help them find new sources of meaning and purpose in their life. I would encourage them to explore hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and seek counseling if needed. At the eighth stage of Erikson’s psychosocial development, known as integrity versus despair, individuals may reflect on their life and feel a sense of fulfillment or regret. I believe it depended on the way they lived their lives, and if they accomplished everything they wanted to. To help my patient I would try to encourage them to focus on the positive aspects of their life and their accomplishments. I would try to remind them of the value they have brought to others and the wisdom they have gained throughout their life experiences. It’s also important to try and provide a supportive environment where they can express their feelings and concerns to you. Yes, I believe all individuals go through the integrity versus despair stage to some extent. It is a natural part of the human developmental process. It’s a time when people reflect on their lives and make sense of their experiences. I think as we get older and realize that our life is coming to an end these ideas and thoughts come up. However, I think the intensity and duration of this stage can vary for each person. This also goes along with being dependent on the life we lived. That’s why it’s important to live your life the way you want to, dream big, and accomplish all of your goals. So that you don’t have any regrets about the life you lived.
