In this course you will be presented with several theories to explain the relationship between social position and health. We have seen the theory that increased social position, quite simply, means that you have more economic resources to marshal to protect and restore one’s health, as well as the theory that increased social position leads to better lifestyle choices. This module introduces a third theory, that the hierarchies themselves are inevitably psychologically damaging to those not residing at the top due to them having to endure the demands and actions of those above them in these hierarchies which causes our bodies undergo a physiological stress response that is deleterious to health over the long term.
