“As a senior graduating in May and currently looking for a paid internship, the one element in the Red Sox article that resonated with me was the section discussing how two 20-something-year-old (Doherty and Schroeder) manage the Red Sox social media accounts. It was interesting that both had different ideas in the careers they wanted and that internships in different areas changed their perspectives and helped them realize that social media and the internet was a viable career. This portion of the article appealed to me because in my interview and discussions with sport industry insiders or practitioners they have all stressed that doing a great job as an intern and/or knowing someone in the industry is the key to getting your start in the industry and ultimately to the job you want.
We have discussed throughout this semester so far, that different platforms of social media appeal to different age groups and Doherty and Schroeder have the numbers to support that claim. The article discusses that each social platform has a different personality, in that Twitter is informational and Instagram offers snapshots which allows them to craft an online personality and stay fresh when they started to use social media to rebrand how baseball (Red Sox) are viewed by younger individuals, how to respond to critics and most of all get a positive message about the Red Sox out in the social media universe. This lines up with the lecture Professor Brannon spoke on and detailing how you should allow fans to connect with the team and use the tools you have for easy advertising. Finally, our guest speaker Mya reiterated the fact that the sporting industry is male dominated and “female lacking” so I was delighted to see two young females at the forefront of making attracting and keeping fans of all ages engaged in college basketball and pro baseball through a fairly new but evolving social media platform.”
