Vestiges of humanist philosophy are recognized through history. An awakening of Renaissance humanism drew interest across Europe during the 14th through16th centuries, particularly in Italy as a study of classical antiquity. This movement progressed through academia of Europe and gained favor with the more affluent and educated upper class. It had close ties to the Catholic church as the movement sought out the virtues of life that could help lead to peace and prosperity for all (Grudin, 2017).

Humanistic psychology gained some interests in the mid-20th century as a response to Freudian psychoanalytic theory and B.F. Skinner’s behaviorism. Psychologists recognized the limitations of theses philosophies in psychology and were seeking a more inclusive holistic approach to psychology. Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers, in particular, emphasized a more humanistic approach that sought out to understand the whole of human being. The most significant theories of the humanistic movement were Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Carl Roger’s theory of self-actualization gain prominence. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs elucidated what drives and motivates human behavior (Maslow, 1943). Roger’s theory of self-actualization demonstrated how those drives and motivation could be utilized by people to become the ideal human (O’Hara, 1989). These ideas were widely accepted throughout western psychology and incorporated into many subsequent theories but had little success on their own.

In 1952, Carl Rogers introduced patient-centered theory or client-centered therapy as an alternative to Freudian psychotherapy (Rogers, 1952). Roger’s therapeutic focus was on the individual and not specifically their problems. The therapist assisted the patient towards the goal connecting with their true self as a balance between their real self and ideal self (Grant, 2017). Roger’s client-centered therapy demonstrated limited influence in psychology as it is considered too passive and unstructured (Joseph, 2015).
