• Classmate #1:This article discussed how Alameda police are urging parents to discuss social media trends like “YouTube challenges” with their children, as they suspect they can create real-world problems. It also talks about how police have responded to numerous incidents of random people being shot with BB guns or gel pellets, with some toys being altered to look real. No one had been seriously injured according to the article, this was in August so there’s no telling if that has changed by now. However, some people have been struck in the eye and many others had different injuries caused by the BB guns pellets striking them. The consequences to this social media challenge won’t be very good for the individuals causing havoc in their community, especially since law enforcement is now involved.
• Classmate #2: This article is about a dangerous social media challenge that can be very deadly especially for teens who spend more time on tiktok or YouTube. the challenge is called the Tide Pod Challenge which is a viral trend where teens film themselves while they attempt to eat Tide laundry detergent pods, before challenging others to do the same and, the videos are horrifying and dangerous. the challenge became viral after circulating on social media with multiple videos uploaded to YouTube of people participating in the challenge. which teens want to participate in to gain some attention and followers on social media. Tide laundry detergent pods contain ethanol, polymers, and hydrogen peroxide all of which are extremely toxic if consumed. which is why this challenge is very dangerous which is why Tide puts a warning label to keep away from children. Social media can encourage teens to do dangerous thing so gain followers but doesn’t educate them on how deadly these challenges can be.
