Qualitative research data is collected by open-ended questions in interviews, focus groups, and observing participants. The qualitative research designs are phenomenological research, ethnographic research, and grounded theory. Phenomenology evaluates the understanding of someone’s lived experiences. The researcher gathers the meaning, emotion, and perception that is associated with the experiences. The data is collected by interviews and conversations (Green & Johnson, 2022). For example, the researcher aims to understand the lived experience of how a nurse felt when following the enhanced maintenance care bundle protocol to reduce Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI). The researcher will ask them to describe their experiences, emotions, and perceptions related to the maintenance care bundle when placing a central venous line.  

Ethnography evaluates different cultures and settings, community and social groups. The researchers immerse themselves into the environment to get a deeper understanding and knowledge about the cultural behaviors and the reasoning behind them. Ethnography focuses on the people’s practices, beliefs, and social dynamics. To get the data, the researcher observes and interviews in the field they live (Green & Johnson, 2022). The researcher will immerse themselves into the daily life of what they are observing. For example, if the researcher wants to understand the homeless shelter more, they will engross themselves in the shelter. They will participate and interact with residents and staff. The researcher will observe, interview with informal conversations. The goal is to understand the social dynamics, routines, and experiences. 

Grounded Theory helps the researcher understand the actions people take. It uses the social process, such as actions, behavior, and interactions, to generate a theory. The researcher interprets the network between people and how they interact with one another. This type of qualitative research is subjective data collecting and conceptual analysis for the theory development (Urcia, 2021).
